May International Supper Club: Kenya

This month, the Care Doula International Supper Club invites you on a flavorful journey to East Africa with a menu inspired by the rich and diverse culinary traditions of Kenya. Kenyan cuisine blends indigenous ingredients with influences from Indian, Arab, and European cooking, creating deeply satisfying dishes full of spice, heart, and history. Staples like rice, maize, and legumes come to life with warm blends of cardamom, cumin, garlic, and fresh herbs—often balanced with bright, raw accompaniments like kachumbari (a fresh tomato and onion salsa).

Our May menu highlights three beloved Kenyan dishes: Chicken Pilau, a fragrant rice dish simmered with whole spices and tender chicken, served with zesty kachumbari; Nyama (Goat Stew), slow-cooked in a rich tomato-onion gravy and served with traditional ugali, a maize-based dough that's perfect for scooping; and Mandazi, pillowy East African doughnuts subtly spiced with cardamom and coconut. Whether you’ve tasted Kenyan food before or it’s your first time, this supper is a warm, comforting introduction to the flavors of Kenya.
